Ketogenic Therapy

Mitochondria: The ketogenic diet- A metabolic based therapy.

Mitochondria are the energy-producing organelles within the cell. One pathway generates ATP via oxidative phosphorylation by using pyruvate derived from glycogen. However another key pathway much less emphasized is Ketone bodie generation by fatty acid oxidation which serve as a fascinating alternative metabolite for energy production. The LCHF -ketogenic diet or periodized diet regiemes, which regulate carbohydrate intake have a propound effect on the metabolic state. They allow the body to utilize its own fat and triglycerides as a primary source of energy production. This has numerous benefits to metabolic condition and overall health. The ketogenic diet can also be adhered to for many genetic conditions and has wide ranging therapeutic application.  These include  Autism, epilepsy and "rare diseases" of glucose metabolism (glucose transporter type 1 and pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency). As metabolic reprogramming from oxidative phosphorylation toward increased glycolysis is a hallmark of cancer cells; there is increasing evidence that the ketogenic diet may also be beneficial as an adjuvant cancer therapy by potentiating the antitumor effect of chemotherapy and radiation treatment.
