Tips on biohacking from Gerry Byrne | Founder & CEO of GloNua

Our bodies are in a state of flux, from the time we wake up, to the middle of the day, and for some, right through to when we go to bed at night. This stress takes effect on our body and mind in a manner of forms and patterns. It involves many complex bio-chemical pathways. We are faced with never ending stressors, tasks and stimulation throughout our daily lives. Theses stresses accumulate, they raise our adrenal response and cortisol levels, which our bodies take some time to process. These build up and if not managed properly, can adversely impact us internally and lead to excess inflammation. The negative consequence on our body function results in hormonal imbalance and an overall decline in health, both in body & mind.

At GloNua we are strong advocates of ‘biohacking’ and/or engagement in natural and alternative therapies to counter-act the adverse effects from our daily, fast paced lives and ever changing and challenging modern world. This involves an understanding of our biological systems and implementing new regimen in a relatively uncomplicated way, to aid you to live a more optimal life. The term “biohacking” can be a holistic step by step approach to gaining better health or as we like to call it a “GloNua Better You”.

What we eat and how we move, directly affects mood, function, body and all of the complex bio-chemical processes that go into make us who we are. Being aware of this is imperative in gaining the insight you require to take the initial steps towards a better you. As the founder of GloNua I feel it’s important to share some of these pillars and key aspects in a simple to understand article.

I’m not going to focus on the negative aspects of eating – dopamine responses etc, and how they impact insulin response and our daily eating pattern.

To begin with I’m going to recommend that you do the following: Implement in your lifestyle one of or a combination of the following: A Purely Keto Diet, A Reduced Carbohydrate Diet or a Paleo diet. The key is to eat Real Nutrient Dense Food (Covered in other blog spots on our page).

After that I would ask you to try and implement some of the following tips into your lifestyle, which I have found to be immensely beneficial in my day to day routine.

TIP 1

Hydration
Always hydrate properly in the morning, a glass of water with a pinch of salt and some lemon helps to rehydrate first thing. Try to leave your first Coffee up to 1 hour after you wake. Add good fats such as our MCTs (Medium Chain Triglycerides). I usually use Collagen & MCT Natural Flavour for added nutrients.

I will add healthy fats to a coffee or a green tea to help fuel my body & brain with clean energy, generally produced in the liver in Ketone form derived from MCT fats.

TIP 2

Intermittent Fasting
Practice Intermittent Fasting. I have implemented it in my life in various forms for years and it has delivered many benefits including better energy, better mood and better cognitive function (also covered in our blog page in depth).

TIP 3

Diet
My regime is based on what I like to call M.E.A.L. (Meat, Eggs, Added oils, Leaves). I advise eating grass fed meats and non-farmed fish. Steaks are great, but there’s so many options when it comes to good quality meat. After a workout or pre bed sometimes I’ll have a protein shake. I don’t eat that many carbohydrates, but they are cycled in and out as they do contain fibre, and at times on Keto, science has found that we can get the benefits utilising such cyclical patterns. Everybody is slightly different, from gender, to age and daily routines, so see what works for you. I do occasionally enjoy a sweet treat after my main meal (I am human). Replace the highly processed industrial mono-cropped agriculture: refined grains, sugar and seed oils with our ancestral diet rich in animal meat, fish, fat and organs (Collagen/gelatine rich) foods.

TIP 4

Exercise

I did do a lot more previously, but now as I am busy with business and other commitments, I generally try to do a fasted walk / run for about or min. 40 minutes, three times a week + first thing in the morning.

I go off road or on trails as I feel the connection with nature delivers a very positive boost. Be careful with balance if you go too long, your mood takes the hit. I do think as we age, more functional type movement is imperative, so we can stay agile and keep movement free for as long as possible.

Resistance bands and weights are really good. They do actually improve so many aspects of your overall wellness and have been shown to boost your confidence. This goes into cellular / hormaonal level and beyond as you build or maintain muscle, feeling stronger and more upright, activities of daily living become easier, it’s a win win all round.

TIP 5

Try to avoid a much as possible:
Sugar, Seed oils, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Trans fats, Refined carbs. These are all present in so many processed foods or packaged foods, just check the labels.

TIP 6

What supplements to take:

I take a multi Vit/Mineral, Omega 3 (2-3g/d),  Magnesium Glycinate or Oxalate. I do like Spirulina in powder or tab format easily added into a shake ¼-1/2 teaspoon 3-4 times per week. I take prebiotics in natural form, Nuts/seeds, green banana, fermented foods. I like almonds but my favourite are walnuts. (notice how they look like a brain). We don’t get enough sunlight in general so Vitamin D3 in is vital to anyone living in the Northern Hemisphere. Take it with K2 and Magnesium to aid absorption and avoid calcification. Our collagens already have Vitamins D3, K2, C and Prebiotic Acacia Fibre inside.
